The lectionary text for this Sunday is from Luke 4:14-21 recounting the return of Jesus to his hometown of Nazareth. Here Jesus begins his public ministry, like a new President announcing in an inaugural address his priorities for action. If this is in fact the key to understanding Jesus and his Messianic ministry, then we who follow him might want to know what he is about.

Miraculous Hospitality

The Gospel lectionary reading for Jan 20 recounts Jesus miracle at the wedding of Cana when the wine runs out. This is one of the most enigmatic scenes in all the Gospels prompting one critical commentator to wonder if this story presents Jesus as nothing more than the Greek god Dionysius or the roman god Baachus, the gods of wine encouraging drunkenness and revelry.  So why does John ‘s Gospel place this story at the very beginning as a sign of divine glor...

Our Pastor


Rev. Stuart Taylor Stuart was called to serve as the Pastor/Head of Staff for Elkin Presbyterian Church in January of 2013. He was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina where his parents were charter members of the John Knox Presbyterian Church. He has two daughters. Rachel is finishing up at Tucson High School and her interests include active involvement in several sports, sustainable agriculture, steel drums and boys. She reads about two to three books a week as does her older sister. Lilly is a sophomore at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon and is an aspiring artist, a free thinker, and a gifted writer like her mother. His daughters are the apples of his eye. Stuart enjoys a daily exercise in the gym, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, camping, reading, movies, dinner conversation, and researching his family history.
